Could someone extract the data from the device and listen to it?

The data on the device are not attainable by any simple means other than LENA software. The device has no playback feature, and does not even contain an audio file. The file that is created on transfer using LENA software is not in a listenable format.

LENA Technical Report #3 on audio specs, available for download from here, details some of what we have done to help protect data.  On page 7, under Section 3.2, you will see, “Initially, audio data were written to 512 MB flash memory using a 4:1 Adaptive Differential Pulse Code  Modulation  compression  scheme  (DVI-4  ADPCM).” (Please note that the size of the flash memory is larger for more recent models.)

As we’ve noted in the technical report, the audio data are stored in an ADPCM format; the audio is not stored in any file format. The data are stored as compressed raw audio, making it difficult to retrieve from off of the recorder. There is no audio file one could simply click and listen to via any standard audio playback options, e.g., Windows Media Player, or iTunes. While we do use a standard type of ADPCM, the data are stored in a proprietary format on the recorder flash card, though not encrypted.

LENA users are responsible for managing access to LENA software, transferred data, and exports.
