LENA Home session preparation and follow-up tasks
Before the session...
1. Check your Group Detail Dashboard.
A few days before you'll meet with the family, check your group's dashboard. Make sure their latest LENA Day successfully uploaded, and make note of any alerts, celebrations, or interesting trends.
Remember, it's recommended to conduct a LENA Home coaching session only if the family has a new LENA Day report since the previous session.
2. Review session content.
Review the following prior to each session:
- LENA Home Coaching Sessions Guide content from Resources, which includes a checklist for each session.
- Accompanying session videos (either from the downloaded PowerPoint or the online playlist - they are the same videos)
- Related LENA Home Parent Workbook pages from Resources
3. Review the family's report.
Review the Tools for Home Visitors course, lessons 8 and 9 if you need a refresher on report interpretation.
Plan a few questions to ask the family, and think about how to best support them in setting their own goal for the next LENA Day.
4. Print any materials you will need.
Printed materials are listed in the coaching guide, or you can click any session number below to see what we recommend.
All of the materials are in Resources unless otherwise noted.
- Application and Informed Consent
- LENA Home flyer
- Snapshot if your program is using, and if the family is unable to complete it online (or just to have a backup administration method!)
Nothing to print this week - but get the family's Talking Tips Chart ready!
- Session Worksheet
- Report with the latest LENA Day data (if you like to provide the family a paper copy, or to have incremental copies for your own files)
- If considering using LENA Family Hub, print the instructions for checking requirements, installing, and using the program to upload devices (Process your LENA device with LENA Family Hub).

If you don't have a paper copy of the Coaching Session Guide, you can print that from Resources, too.
5. If exchanging devices, be sure the device is ready.
Device must be charged and empty, with no error message on the screen. Review how to prepare devices if needed.
6. Pack up anything else you might need!
Examples include:
- Star stickers to place on the Talking Tips Chart
- Replacement LENA vest, if an exchange is needed
- Materials for any optional activities
- Incentives, if your program uses them
- LENA USB cable, if family will be using LENA Family Hub to upload their own data
After the session...
Depending on the session number and your program's methods, you may need to do one or more of these tasks. You'll find session-specific lists in your LENA Home Coaching Sessions Guide.
- Process and charge the family's device
- Enter paper Snapshot into LENA Online OR send online Snapshot link via text or email
- Enter Reading Minutes into LENA Online
- Unassign device(s) from child and mark child as Completed (after final session only)
